At the suggestion of a friend I've decided to make the move over to Tumblr, but I'll still be using this site to post links only. If you stuck around for a year and half and the only thing you can say is you appreciate the music I listen to but never cared what I had to say or what I thought or you think the videos are useless or think I'm too emo (LC) or any other number of excuses, then don't update your bookmarks. When she awoke today, something was different. She could feel it. Most days, she felt as though the two sides of her brain were working in unison to create serenity. Of course they could also be working towards calamity, but its all relative. Right? They are forming this incredible bond that will guide her through each day. Today was different though. Today when she awoke, they were talking to each other. The left and right sides of her brain were talking to each other.

And today?

Today, what?

Will everything be OK today?

Is it ever? No matter what we say, it always comes back to the same thing.

Which is?

That’s when she opened her eyes.

Could they have kept me asleep 10 minutes longer?

Would it have mattered?

Would the question be answered?

Can that question be answered?

Maybe it could. Then again, maybe not. Only she can be the judge. She had to ask herself those questions. As if she knew the answers.

Would everything be OK today? Maybe.

Is everything ever OK? Maybe.

That’s the thing. Everything seemed OK today. It felt like every other day. She was tired all morning. Depressed at lunch. She smoked a cigarette. Another. Told herself not to worry. She was content with the rest of the day. Happy on the way home, struggling to eat dinner, depressed again. Like clockwork, everything was the same. She thought she was dreaming this morning.

But what if I wasn’t?

Of course, she could have been dreaming. That seems like the most likely explanation. She wondered if she could tell someone.

What would they think?

Would they know?

They would say I was dreaming.

Do they already know?

I should go to bed.

Would that help?

I had to be dreaming.

That’s about the way most days had gone lately. Going to bed usually helped. She always woke up feeling better. Except today she hadn’t. It wasn’t bad, just different. She thought she was OK. So she asked again, just differently.

Was everything OK today?

Was it ever?

Maybe.

Other than Sam Beam, Sufjan Stevens, and Ben Bridwell (in that order), José González has a voice that soothes more than any other. The vocal melody compounded with his relaxed, classical guitar creates a near perfect sonic palette for the masses. But that's just José solo. This is Junip. After releasing a couple of EPs, including Rope and Summit earlier this summer, the Swedish trio has finally brought an LP to life. While not venturing too far from González's classic sound, Fields still offers a new perspective on what González has to offer. A less than intricate drumbeat, a thumping bass line, and slight fuzz make tracks such as "In Every Direction", "Without You", "Don't Let It Pass", and "To the Grain" pop. And its great music to fuck to, for what more can you ask?

The Deadly Syndrome - The Ortolan

Hailing from the musical hotbed that is Silver Lake, California (see: Natives, Local), The Deadly Syndrome are creating quite the name for themselves after having toured with likes of Silversun Pickups and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. In truth, I have no idea whether or not they are creating any kind of name for themselves as their new LP, Nolens Volens, was just introduced to me a few days ago and was subsequently met with a resounding "EH...". For some reason I was compelled enough to pick up their debut and after a few listens, I can safely say that I'm hooked. Other than the random annoyingly loud thrash which peeks its head from time to time ("Heart"), The Ortolan is wonderful. "Eucalyptus", "Winter in You", "Animals Wearing Clothes", and "I Release You" are an amazing representation of what the band is capable of and as a result, I will be going back and reassessing the merits of Nolens Volens.

Welcome back, old friend. Sufjan Stevens has finally resurfaced with something more than a collection of outtakes, Christmas songs, and remasters. And thankfully All Delighted People is an EP only in name, clocking in at 60 minutes spread out over eight not-so-groundbreaking-yet-beautifully-stunning tracks. Both versions of the title track, "All Delighted People", are good (and long) enough to warrant their own EP, but its the middle three songs that carry the effort. "Enchanting Ghost", "Heirloom", and "From the Mouth of Gabriel" are classic Stevens works with giant buildup, graceful imagery, and deep meaning. All Delighted People is only $5 through Stevens' Bandcamp page, so just fork it over because an artist like this doesn't come along very often and he deserves all the support he can muster.

After listening to Menomena's newest release, Mines, nonstop for the last month, I decided to check out some of their older stuff. This gem lives up to the hype it garnered back in 2007, even if it doesn't quite meet its successor's greatness. Friend and Foe offers everything you could expect, even after jumping in three years late. "Muscle'N Flo" kicks the album off with a bang and it never looks back. While "Weird" and "My My" have taken up the most of time recently, "Boyscout'n" contains the best line I've heard in quite some time: "I once believed you were my savior/But now you're nothing but a traitor/And still I'll wait for your return/I get the feeling I have waited a whole lifetime in vain/A lot to lose with nothing to gain". Yeah, compound that with some of the most well-placed whistling this side of Andrew Bird and you've got yourself quite a breathtaking song. When listening to this album, along with Mines, I only wish I would've learned of Menomena sooner. And that they continue this streak for a long, long time.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. is the new electro-pop collaboration featuring Joshua Epstein of The Silent Years and Daniel Zott, in the same vein as Wes Miles and Rostam Batmanglij's Discovery. There's alot to like about the band's debut EP, Horse Power, especially if you're a fan of Epstein's original band. "Nothing But Our Love" is the masterpiece of the EP as it will have you singing along with its expressions on everything you want from love. The drug references also mean that it wouldn't be out of place on the next The Silent Years album (and only god knows when that's coming out). If Horse Power is any indication, much should be expexted from the band's upcoming full-length.

Ra Ra Riot - Boy (EP)

So we're about a month out until my second-most anticipated album of 2010 (thank you Delta Spirit, thank you 1000 times over) finally hits the shelves. In order to keep us pacing with excitement, Ra Ra Riot has made the Boy EP available to the general population. The lead and title track, "Boy", doesn't stray far from the classic RRR sound and "Saccharin and the War" seems like your typical B-side. Its the closer, though, that makes the EP worth the $1.99 iTunes fee. "Keep It Quiet (Bear)" is incredible. The aura and subtle nuance that surrounds the track's core sends chills down my spine and speaks in droves. Its unknown how different this version is from the album, but here's to hoping it doesn't alter the presence of its meaning. Definitely pick this up right now.

Oh, and aren't Alexandra Lawn and Rebecca Zeller the best looking women on the indie rock scene? I vote yes. If Mormonism were legal, you'd make me happy. Both of you.

This is what happens when you throw Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Yeasayer, Phantom Planet, and The Kooks into a musical stew. Miniature Tigers is the newest indie pop outfit to make the rounds, hitting the scene with so many hooks it'd be impossible to not get noticed. I've been listening to Fortress all morning, and each time it spins I find a new track that I just can't get enough of. What I'm saying is that you'd be better off just trusting me and getting this now. You don't want to miss out.

Frontier Ruckus - Deadmalls and Nightfalls

So its been awhile since a posted an actual album, right? Well here you go: the new Frontier Ruckus release, Deadmalls and Nightfalls. It unfortunately doesn't live up to the expectations laid down by the band's debut, The Orion Songbook, but that's not a completely bad thing. Where The Orion Songbook was a great album that really cashed in on that raw, angst-ridden folk sound, Deadmalls and Nightfalls seems to slow the band's progress with a little more production and pop. On the new album, the band seems to have taken a cue from Straylight Run as singer Matthew Milla could double for whoever the singer was from that early 2000s emo troupe (Yeah, I liked that ONE CD they had back in the day. So what?). But that's not to say that there aren't classic Ruckus tracks on Deadmalls. "Silverfishes" and "Pontiac, the Nightbrink" are for those of you, like me, you want more folk and less pop in my Frontier Ruckus. Anyways, the album isn't bad by any stretch, but its not what I wanted or expected either. Maybe its a grower, not a show-er? The band does have two shows coming up, July 22 in Denton or July 23 in Dallas, one of which I plan on attending. I would recommend you do the same.

Maps and Atlases - Perch Patchwork

Back in March of 2009, I ventured north to catch Ra Ra Riot in a rare, downsouth performance. I was pretty stoked that it was Spring Break, but also disappointed that I would be venturing alone as everyone I wanted to go with was either in Crested Butte or didn't like Ra Ra Riot. So I did what I usually do when heading to a concert and arrived about two and half hours earlier than I needed or intended. Normally when this happens, I end up smoking way too many cigarettes outside while some shitty, opening band tries their best to make as much noise as possible. The opener on this night did not change my overall perception of this theory as the ever-sucking Passion Pit set the night in motion. The second act, however, changed everything. That second act, you may be asking? Yes, Maps and Atlases. I was blown away by what I would later describe as "a less synth version of Minus the Bear, with Fozzie Bear singing". As the year passed Passion Pit blew up (I don't know how or why) and Ra Ra Riot started gaining steam, while Maps and Atlases stayed incredibly static. Well static no more, Maps and Atlases has finally released their debut LP.

Perch Patchwork does not disappoint. Not in the least bit. Every track flows wonderfully and rings in your head hours after the music has subsided. The previously released single, "Solid Ground", sounds as great as ever but other highlights await later in the album. "Pigeon" immediately caught my ear with lyrics that I swear were written to help get me out of the mess I've found (and created) myself in. There really isn't a down moment as even the so-called "filler" add to the depth of album. This isn't a band you want to sleep on, so pick this up now.

Goodbye, For Now

The past two and a half months have been some of the most difficult times of my life. During this time, I have had four days (including today) where life has put me through the emotional ringer. Sometimes even when you want things to be better, you know they can't and its just part of living. When you want something to work so badly and things fall apart, it makes it worse than you could've ever imagined. Certain things have helped and certain things haven't. One thing that helped get me through it was music. To me, music is one of the most influential and important things in the world. It can mean so many things to so many people. As helpful as its been, sometimes its just not enough. Basically what I'm getting at is that unless I feel totally inspired, I'm going to take an extended break from the blogging community. I need to get right, and as you can probably tell by this emo-charged essay, I'm not right. Hopefully, all this will pass soon and I can get back to enjoying one of things I used to love doing. Until then, I will leave you a quote from last night's finale of The Pacific (which I am going to miss so much). The only way to describe what Sid told Sledge when he returned from Japan is that Sid got it right. This quote is life in its truest form.

"You just gotta pull yourself out of bed in the morning and get on with the day. You do that enough times in a row, you forget some things... for a while, anyway."

Wolf Parade - Expo 86

My Spencer Krug love affair has reached new heights with the release of Wolf Parade's newest album, Expo 86. Of all the Krug projects, Wolf Parade is definitely the most enjoyable and after their recent lapse in judgement (aka At Mount Zoomer), I'm back on the bandwagon. "What Did My Lover Say? (It Always Had to Go This Way)" and "Ghost Pressure" rival Apologies to Queen Mary's "You Are A Runner and I Am My Father's Son" in the race for my favorite WP song. Other stand-outs from Expo include "Little Golden Age", "Pobody's Nerfect", and "Yulia". The only point where the album missteps is "Two Men in New Tuxedos", which is incredibly disappointing after the incredible buildup on "Pobody's Nerfect". And while most of the band's work tends to be an acquired taste, Expo 86 is definitely their most accessible album to date.

Horse Feathers - Thistled Spring

The difference between Horse Feathers' first two albums, Words are Dead and House with No Home, was vast as House with No Home was deeper, sadder, and just plain better than its predecessor. Two years later, the band has come back with a new lineup and a more upbeat, though still dark and morose, sound. Singer Justin Ringle has really come into his own on Thistled Spring and everyone is better for it, as the album rises and falls with all imaginable emotions. The best tracks ("Belly of June", "This Bed", and "The Widower") are definitely more accessible than the ones off House with No Home, even if the album doesn't quite meet expectations. But its close. Very, very close.

Also, I ordered this CD from the band's label one month ago and it still hasn't arrived. So if anyone from Kill Rock Stars is out there, I'm still waiting. And I'm not happy about it.

Shit, yesterday was a mess. Band of Horses, The Black Keys, and Josh Ritter all leaked on the same day. Brothers is the best, hands down. Even though I loved Attack & Release, I don't consider myself a huge fan of the band and I think I A&R mostly because of what Danger Mouse did for their sound. Brothers, however, is one hot mess of an album. The heavy-hitting, grungy-blues guitar riffs are at their finest on the first three tracks ("Everlasting Light", "Next Girl", and "Tighten Up"), and the album never really slows down after those. Definitely worth picking up.

On a side note, the new Band of Horses leak is a shitty rip version so I can't give Infinite Arms its due quite yet. Its still good enough that I'm going to buy the damn thing, but I'm going to hold judgment for the time being.

Delta Spirit - History From Below

Delta Spirit, along with Ra Ra Riot, has become one of my favorite bands over the last two or so years. On top of a fantastic live show, the band's anti-folk, Americana (they are probably the Americana Cold War Kids) sound has really caught me. Throw in the fact that the band's debut album, Ode to Sunshine, was one of the best (if not the best) of 2008, and you have the perfect storm. The band doesn't deviate much from the style Ode to Sunshine made famous for the sophomore release, but is that really a bad thing? Sure, its not going to grab you like the debut, but History From Below tightens up the sound and brings together the spirit (I know and am sorry) of the band. "Bushwick Blues" and "White Table" tend to be the most upbeat and fun, but "Ballad of Vitaly", the 8-minute closer, speaks the loudest and with the most meaning, as "Streetwalker" did on Ode.

Finally, I feel bad for posting this because there's still two months until it is released, its such a great album, and I'm sure it will get taken down. I can't hold back though. So please, please, please, please support the band and buy the album (if you like it, of course) when it comes out. And don't forget, if you're in the Tulsa area on June 14, check out Delta Spirit at Cain's Ballroom.
